Job Title: Shift Manager
Location: Milton Keynes Outhouse, Magna Park
Reports to: Plant Manager
Job Purpose: As a member of the Plant management team, the Shift Manager is responsible for RM operations across the shift, leading the successful achievement of quality of service, productivity, automation, and employee targets. This role plays a vital part in contributing to the Plant operating plan.
Key Accountabilities:
Health & Safety:
- Ensure risk assessments for the shift are completed and safe systems of work are in place.
- Ensure compliance with safety requirements and operate in a safe manner at all times following WCM principles.
- Investigate any accidents on the shift in line with world-class mail safety tools and techniques.
- Lead major initiatives to improve safety on the shift and across the plant.
Leadership:
- Participate positively and constructively in the high-level leadership of the Plant.
- Lead, coach, develop, and support front line managers to ensure they can lead their teams effectively and meet performance objectives.
- Create an engaging and motivating working environment, celebrating successes.
- Ensure consistent application of RM policies and processes, including HR policies.
- Maintain effective communication processes on the shift, ensuring all managers and front line staff receive appropriate communications.
- Work with the Plant Manager and other shift managers to develop talent within the Plant and ensure a succession plan is in place.
- Conduct monthly performance reviews with direct reports and ensure 1-to-1s are embedded in line with performance management standards.
Relationships/Customer Interface:
- Proactively manage interfaces with other shifts to ensure correct inputs and outputs, supporting the achievement of KPI measures.
- Address customer issues promptly and maintain regular contact with Collection and Delivery Sector Managers and the Distribution Manager.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with colleagues in the plant and regional stakeholders.
Production Planning and Performance:
- Oversee the effective running of the shift, driving the achievement of metrics and targets for people, customer performance, and financial areas.
- Manage the shift budget within the overall Plant budget.
- Develop the operating plan for the shift in conjunction with other shift managers and the production control team.
- Use PSP to manage all people-related activities and targets across the shift.
- Ensure accurate recording of all shift data (traffic and hours).
- Focus on continuous improvement for the shift and the plant, developing and deploying process improvements.
Change Management:
- Lead the deployment of change across the shift using a project management approach.
- Share improvements and change learnings with other Shift Managers and support improvement initiatives in other shifts/functions.
- Ensure robust contingency plans are in place for the shift and regularly reviewed.
- Act as a “champion of change” and role model appropriate behaviours.
Key Dimensions:
- Lead the management team of dedicated front line managers and shift engineers.
- Responsible for the shift budget for the plant.
Key Knowledge, Skills, Experience, and Qualifications Required:
Knowledge:
- Safety: PIC trained with experience in safety tools and techniques.
- Operational: Expert knowledge of letters operation and overall plant operation.
- WCM: Understanding of WCM tools and techniques, with a willingness to learn and lead the autonomous maintenance pillar.
- Commercial: Understanding of business and regional challenges, able to communicate the big picture to influence others.
